Custom Printed Food Boxes: MOQ, Pricing Factors & Lead Time Guide

If you are sourcing custom printed food boxes for the first time, the three questions that matter are always the same: what is the minimum order, what will it cost, and how long will it take? This guide answers all three with real numbers from our factory floor in Johor, Malaysia.

Quick answers

| Question | Answer at UNITE EcoPack |

|---|---|

| Minimum order (MOQ) | 500 cartons per SKU |

| Sample lead time | 7–10 days (with your logo) |

| Mass production lead time | 30 days from artwork approval |

| Printing methods | Screen printing / heat transfer / in-mold |

| Monthly capacity | 20M+ pieces |

| Compliance | FDA, ISO 9001, EU LFGB, BPI Compostable, EN 13432 |

What "MOQ 500 cartons" actually means

Most overseas factories quote custom printing MOQs of 10,000–50,000 pieces per design. We set our MOQ at 500 cartons per SKU so that regional restaurant chains, cloud kitchens, and distributors can test branded packaging without warehouse-scale commitments. Depending on the product, 500 cartons is roughly — see our [Low MOQ explained guide](/en/blog/low-moq-food-packaging-500-cartons) for per-category breakdowns.

The 5 factors that drive your unit price

1. Box format and size. A kraft takeaway container ([TTGCK series](/en/products/kraft-takeaway)) and a wire-handle box ([WFP series](/en/products/wire-handle)) use different blanks and forming steps.

2. Printing method. Screen printing suits 1–2 spot colors at the lowest cost; heat transfer and in-mold printing deliver photo-quality branding at a premium.

3. Number of colors. Each additional color adds plate/setup cost that amortizes over volume — this is why unit prices drop sharply above MOQ.

4. Material and coating. Food-grade kraft with PE coating is standard; compostable coating options certified to EN 13432 are available at a different price point.

5. Order volume. As a factory (not a trading company), our pricing removes the middleman margin — typically a 20–30% saving versus sourcing through intermediaries.

> Tip: send us your target unit price with your inquiry. We will tell you honestly which format, print method, and volume can hit it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order below 500 cartons for a first trial?

For unprinted stock items, smaller trial quantities are possible — contact us with your use case. Custom printed orders start at 500 cartons per SKU.

Do you own the printing plates and molds, or do I?

Can you match my brand's Pantone colors?

Yes — custom color matching is part of our OEM service, including matching to your existing packaging.

What files do you need for artwork?

Vector files (AI/PDF) preferred. Our in-house design team can also redraw from a high-resolution logo image.

Are printed boxes still food-safe?

Yes. Inks and coatings used on food-contact surfaces are covered by our FDA and EU LFGB compliance documentation — see [how to verify food packaging compliance](/en/blog/fda-compliance-vs-certification-food-packaging).
